A group of Parish members of St. Gregorios Orthodox Cathedral, Hosur Road, residing in and around Hongasandra, formed a prayer group and got together twice a month. This resulted in the formation of Hongsandra ward and started celebrating Holy Qurbana at St. Francis School Premises from October 2005. In 2006, under the able guidance and blessings of H. G. Dr. Yakob Mar Iraenios Metropolitan, Sunday School classes started in the same premises with the Examination centre at St.Gregorios Cathedral.
King Solomon says in Proverbs 22:6 “ Train the child in the way he should go,and when he is old he will not turn from it” .
From the very limited number of classes and students at that time, it grew to the present stage of classes Preparatory to Class XII.
In the beginning stages, this Sunday School flourished under the leadership and guidance of Yoohanon Ramban(presently H G Joshua Mar Nicodimos , Nilakkal Diocese) . Mr. Santosh Varghese served as the Head Master from 2006 to 2009.
Beginning of Sunday School classes in the Church:
The existing Church at Begur was built in 2009, and the Sunday school classes were shifted to the Church under the able direction of Vicar of Rev. Fr. P.C.Philip (presently P.C.Philip Cor-Episcopa).
Mr. Shibu Mathew served as the Head Master from the year 2010 to 2012. During this period, under the able leadership and guidance of Vicar Rev.Fr. Varghese P Idichandy ,(2010 -2013) we grew into a full-fledged Sunday-school with classes starting from Primary to std X, actively participating and winning prizes in Diocesian Level competitions . Mrs. Dina Mathai was the HeadMistress from 2012 April to 2014 December. During this period, we could start conducting our Sunday school classes in the Centenary Hall a part of the newly built parsonage.
From 2013 to 2016 Under the guidance of Vicar Rev.Fr. James Kuttikandam our Sunday School grew to a strength of 80 students from class preparatory to XII and 20 teachers and Mrs. Asha Biju serving as Head Mistress.
Presently in 2016 Rev.Fr.Joe Mathew, is the Church Vicar, who guides and supports us for the smooth functioning of the Sunday School and nurtures the spiritual growth of students and teachers as well.
Sunday School Students:
Apart from the regular academics and learning classes, our Sunday School students play an active role in Church activities. They participate actively in Quiz competitions, Essay-writing, Elocution, Singing and other competitions. They take up an important role in Church Harvest festival activities, Onam Celebrations, Christmas eve programmes, Carol singing and other cultural programmes. Money earned by students from different activities are utilised for Charity or other Church needs. This inculcates a feeling of care and concern to the society in which they live in.
